Dunn’s River Falls is one of Jamaica’s best-known attractions, and climbing the terraced waterfall sounded like an unforgettable family adventure. It was memorable—but our experience was also more physically challenging than the excursion listing led us to expect.
This is our first Cruising Cove excursion review. We are sharing the practical details, the good moments, and the difficult parts so your family can decide whether this excursion fits your abilities and comfort level.

The ride to Dunn’s River Falls
Our ride took about an hour and a half, although travel time will vary based on your port, traffic, and excursion itinerary. The bus guide kept everyone entertained along the way and was one of the highlights of the day.
Our bus also stopped at a store on the way to the waterfall. Parents should know that some merchandise was not kid-friendly, including marijuana-themed pipes and shirts. It was not a major part of the excursion, but it is worth knowing before your family walks inside.
What the waterfall climb is really like
Groups form a human chain as they move up the falls. Holding hands helps everyone follow the safest route and understand where to place their feet. Even with a guide, the rocks are slippery and the water moves quickly in some sections.
The woman in front of us let go of our son’s hand, and we became separated. That was frightening, but the waterfall guides noticed and were extremely helpful. Their attentiveness made a difficult moment much easier to manage.
Our honest fitness and family experience
For full transparency, I had finished chemotherapy only two months before this trip and had gained about 60 pounds from steroids. I knew I was not in peak condition, but because the listing said ages six and older, I assumed the climb would be fairly easy.
It was not easy for us. My husband and I both fell, and the fast-moving water made some sections more intimidating than expected. Based on our experience, we personally would not recommend this excursion with a nine-year-old.
Our family’s caution: An age minimum does not necessarily mean the activity will feel easy or comfortable for every child—or every adult.
Consider balance, strength, confidence in rushing water, and whether everyone can stay connected to the group on slippery rocks.
What to bring
- Water shoes with strong grip: smooth rocks and rushing water make traction essential.
- A bathing suit: you should expect to get completely wet.
- A secure waterproof pouch: keep essentials attached to you and your hands free.
- Cash for tips: plan for your bus guide, driver, and excursion guides.
- A realistic view of your group: assess mobility, balance, stamina, and comfort in moving water.
Was Dunn’s River Falls worth it?
For guests in decent physical shape who are comfortable with slippery rocks and rushing water, Dunn’s River Falls can be a great excursion. The waterfall is beautiful, the bus guide made the long ride enjoyable, and the waterfall guides were amazing when we needed help.
Despite the challenges, we felt the experience was worth the money overall. We would simply approach it with more realistic expectations—and make a different choice for our family with a nine-year-old.
