The June 2026 rule update
Disney Cruise Line updated its door decoration policy on May 28, 2026, effective for sailings starting June 3, 2026. The core change: decorations now have to stay on your stateroom door only — no more spilling onto the hallway walls or ceiling around your door, which some guests had been doing more and more in recent years.
Everything else about the tradition is unchanged. Magnetic decorations are still fully allowed, fish extenders are unaffected, and this remains one of the most fun, low-cost ways to personalize your stateroom before you even step inside.
What's allowed and what's not
- Magnets: preferred. DCL stateroom doors are magnetic surfaces (with one exception below), and character magnets, signs, and displays are the standard way to decorate. Non-magnetic décor can still be fine if it stays on the door and doesn’t damage it — tape, adhesives, hooks, and suction cups are the hard no.
- Tape, adhesives, hooks, suction cups: no. Anything that risks damaging the door is prohibited.
- Door only: yes. Hallway walls and ceiling: no. This is the new rule as of June 2026.
- Fish Extenders: still OK — the June update targets hallway overflow and damaging attachments, not the classic over-door Fish Extender tradition.
- Sound or video elements: no, as a courtesy to other guests in the corridor.
- Over-the-door organizers: no — generic organizers (shoe racks, toiletry hangers, and similar) are prohibited; Fish Extenders for gift exchanges are the usual exception guests still bring.
- Damage a door decorating it improperly, and you're looking at a $100 fee per incident.
Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors, not magnetic ones — magnets simply won't stick. If you're in one of those rooms, a fish extender is your best option instead.
Door number plate sizes
Every stateroom door has a built-in number plate you can decorate around. On the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy, it's a circle roughly 7.5 inches in diameter. On Wish-class ships — Wish, Treasure, Destiny, and (expected) Believe — it's a curved-edge rectangle, roughly 4.5 by 7 inches. Disney Adventure plate dimensions aren’t confirmed here yet — measure onboard or check recent sailing reports before ordering a custom cutout. Many guests build their door magnet design around this shape, having a character "peek out" from behind the number plate.
Ideas within the new rules
- A large central character magnet sized to your door, with smaller magnets around it
- A "countdown" or cruise-number magnet if this isn't your first sailing
- Birthday, anniversary, or first-cruise celebration signage — all magnetic
- A family name banner across the top of the door
- Pack decorations in your carry-on, not checked luggage, so you can decorate as soon as you board — before checked bags typically arrive
