What to book, what to skip
- Book Disney when: the beach club or snorkel boat is farther out, you’re with little kids, or you want the ship-wait cushion.
- Go independent when: you’re doing downtown San Miguel or a nearby club with a clear taxi plan and a real all-aboard buffer.
- Skip: stacking reef + beach club + ruins/ferry in one call. Pick one job.
- Skip: mainland Playa/ruins day-trips unless you have a long call and a vetted return plan — highest miss-the-ship risk.

- Taxis. Plentiful at the pier. Settle on a price for the beach club (or use a club’s included shuttle). Round-trip + wait arrangements matter more than the headline one-way fare.
- Pier shopping zone. You’ll walk through retail before you clear into town or taxis — fine for a look; don’t let it steal your beach window.

What to eat ashore
- Beach clubs. Many packages include lunch and drinks — that’s the low-decision lunch for families.
- Downtown. Fresh seafood, tacos, and plaza restaurants a few blocks in beat the first souvenir-adjacent menu you see.
- Street smart. Busy places with turnover are the usual short-cruise approach; save experimental food adventures for longer land trips.
- Kids. Clubs with familiar grill options win over a scenic taxi hunt when everyone is already sandy and hungry.
What’s worth bringing home
- Downtown. Silver, resorts wear, and souvenirs — set a budget; haggling is normal in some stalls, less so in fixed-price stores.
- Pier stores. Convenience priced for cruise traffic. Fine for forgotten sunscreen; not usually the best place for jewelry.
- Pressure pitches. Timeshare and “special for you” tours near the pier are common. You can decline and keep moving.
With kids in daylight
- Stick to known clubs, downtown tourist blocks, and booked operators for boat days.
- Reef conditions vary — listen to snorkel guides; don’t freestyle far from the group.
- Sun and current are the real risks more often than crime in the tourist corridor. Reef-safe sunscreen, hats, water.
- Cash for taxis and tips; cards work widely downtown and at clubs — have a backup either way.

If Cozumel is your one Western Caribbean swim day, protect water time. Downtown will be there on the walk back; a jeep “highlights” tour that barely leaves the pavement rarely beats a good club.
The one thing repeats push
Get on (or in) the Caribbean — don’t only do the pier mall. Whether that’s a reputable beach club, a calm snorkel, or a park day with easy entry, the water is why people remember Cozumel. Shopping is the side quest.
