Use the same checklist at every port
Transportation
Walking distance from the pier, taxi norms, tourist-bus traps, and when a private driver is worth it.
Food
What’s worth leaving the port zone for, what’s tourist-markup, and what’s safe for a short window.
Shopping
What’s actually worth bringing home vs. what’s priced for cruise passengers.
Safety
Areas to skip, pier scams, and what’s fine in daylight with kids.
Timing
All-aboard math, tender delays, and how long the “good” version of the port actually takes.
Don’t miss
The one thing locals and repeat cruisers say is worth the walk.
Private islands vs commercial ports
| Private island | Commercial port | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Castaway Cay, Lookout Cay | Nassau, Cozumel, San Juan, St. Thomas… |
| Need a paid tour? | Usually no — beach + BBQ is the day | Often yes if you want a beach club or far activity |
| Transport decisions | Tram / walk on island | Walk vs taxi vs booked transfer — first question every time |
| Biggest risk | Sun + overbooking cabanas you don’t need | Missing all-aboard after an independent tour |
Work backward from all-aboard
- Note all-aboard time first (not just “we’re docked until afternoon”). Build a buffer for tenders, traffic, and getting back through security.
- Decide beach day vs. town day vs. paid excursion before you’re on the pier — switching late usually means paying tourist prices for a rushed version of both.
- If you want a paid tour, use the Port Adventures filter guide and the Disney vs. independent tradeoff.
- Commercial ports vary wildly by walking distance from the pier. Distance is the first fact to check — it controls food, shopping, and whether you need a taxi at all.
