Three clean options
Juneau packs a lot into one call: glacier, wildlife on the water, or downtown on foot. Unlike most Caribbean ports, the pier drops you right into the small downtown core — the harder decision is how far out of town to go for the glacier or whale-watching boats.
Mendenhall Glacier
A drive-up glacier with a visitor center, viewpoints, and (conditions permitting) trails to nearby falls — no hiking required to see it well.
Whale watching
Humpback sightings are common on Juneau boat tours in season — one of the more reliable whale-watching stops on an Alaska itinerary.
Downtown on foot
Compact, walkable streets right off the pier — shops, the Red Dog Saloon, and a tram to mountain views without a long transfer.

- No rental-car necessity. Downtown, the tram, and many tour meeting points are all walkable from the pier — a real difference from most Caribbean stops.
- Independent shuttles. Mendenhall Glacier shuttles are common and simpler than a formal excursion for families comfortable arranging their own return time.

What to eat ashore
- Fresh seafood. Wild Alaska salmon and halibut show up on nearly every downtown menu — a fish-and-chips stand or a sit-down spot both work for a short window.
- Tracy’s King Crab Shack–style stands. Dockside crab and chowder stands are a Juneau tradition for cruise passengers — expect a line at peak times.
- Downtown cafés. Coffee shops and bakeries are an easy warm-up stop if the weather turns cool or wet.
- Kids. Simple grill or chowder options beat a fancier seafood restaurant if everyone’s cold and ready to head back.
What’s worth bringing home
- Alaska Native art. Look for authenticity markers (like the Silver Hand program) if you want genuine Tlingit, Haida, or other Alaska Native work rather than mass-produced souvenirs.
- Local salmon and smoked seafood. Vacuum-sealed options travel well and make a distinctive souvenir.
- Cruise-line jewelry stores. The same diamond/tanzanite shops found in other cruise ports line the main strip — fine to browse, not required.
With kids in daylight
- Downtown Juneau is compact, walkable, and generally low-crime in daylight.
- Weather changes fast — layers matter more than any other single packing decision for this port.
- Glacier viewpoints and trails can be slick; stick to marked paths and keep an eye on kids near the moraine and water.
- Whale-watching boats can be choppy — motion-sensitive kids may want a seasickness plan before boarding.

Juneau is one of the easier Alaska ports to DIY because downtown is dockside. Pick one big activity (glacier or whales), not both, unless your call is long — then enjoy the walkable downtown with whatever time is left.
The one thing repeats push
See the glacier up close, even briefly. Mendenhall is one of the few glaciers you can reach without a serious hike, and its retreat is visible year to year — it’s the kind of sight that’s genuinely different from anything on a Caribbean itinerary. Pair it with a short downtown walk rather than rushing both a glacier tour and a full whale-watching trip.
