- Rain gear beats an umbrella. Ketchikan gets over 150 inches of rain a year — a real rain jacket and waterproof shoes matter more here than anywhere else on the itinerary.
- Walkable core. Creek Street and much of downtown are steps from the pier, so a rainy day doesn’t have to mean a wasted call.

What to eat ashore
- Fresh salmon and halibut. Ketchikan calls itself the salmon capital of the world for good reason — grilled or fried, it’s the local specialty to look for.
- Creek Street cafés. Small waterfront spots along the boardwalk make a good rainy-day lunch stop with a view of the creek.
- Fishing-day catch. Some charters offer to have your catch processed and shipped — ask before you book if that matters to you.
- Kids. Simple chowder or fish-and-chips spots downtown beat waiting out weather for a fancier reservation.
What’s worth bringing home
- Alaska Native art and carvings. Look for authenticity markers if you want genuine Tlingit, Haida, or Tsimshian work — totem park gift shops are a good place to start.
- Rain gear (yes, really). If you underpacked, downtown outfitters sell exactly what you need for the rest of the sailing.
- Cruise-line jewelry chains. Present here as in most Alaska ports — fine to browse, not the local specialty.
With kids in daylight
- Downtown Ketchikan and Creek Street are compact, well-trafficked, and generally very safe in daylight.
- Wet boardwalks and wooden stairs on Creek Street get slippery — good grip shoes matter more than style.
- Floatplane and fishing charters are weather-dependent; operators cancel or reroute for safety, so build flexibility into your day rather than fighting the schedule.
- Layered, waterproof clothing is a safety issue as much as a comfort one — cold, wet kids tire and complain fast.

Ketchikan’s biggest timing risk is weather-driven cancellations, not distance. Book flexible or Disney-run tours for Misty Fjords or fishing days, and keep a rainy-day downtown plan ready so a washed-out excursion doesn’t sink the whole call.
The one thing repeats push
Walk Creek Street and see the totem poles — don’t let rain talk you out of it. The boardwalk over the creek and the concentration of totem art here are unlike anything else on a typical itinerary, rain or shine. If the weather cooperates, a fishing charter or a Misty Fjords flight is the extra a lot of repeat visitors say made the stop.
