- Skip: Magens Bay + full downtown shopping marathon + a second beach. Pick one job.

- Open-air taxis. St. Thomas’s signature “safari bus” taxis run set routes to Magens Bay and back — plentiful at the pier, agree the fare first.

What to eat ashore
- Magens Bay. Beach-side food shacks handle burgers, grilled fish, and cold drinks — simple and reliable for a swim day.
- Charlotte Amalie. A mix of Caribbean and American-style restaurants a few streets off the main shopping drag beat the first pier-adjacent menu.
- Boat tours. Some sail/snorkel trips include a light lunch or rum punch — check your specific booking.
- Kids. Familiar beach-shack menus are the easy call over hunting for something fancier on a short window.
What’s worth bringing home
- Duty-free jewelry, watches, and liquor. St. Thomas is one of the Caribbean’s best-known duty-free stops — compare against home prices before assuming it’s automatically a deal.
- Local crafts and rum. Lower-stakes souvenirs than jewelry, and easy to find in the same downtown blocks.
- Pier stores. Convenient for forgotten sunscreen or a hat; not usually where the best jewelry prices are.
With kids in daylight
- Charlotte Amalie’s main shopping streets and Magens Bay are well-trafficked and generally comfortable in daylight with normal city awareness.
- Open-air taxis carry multiple parties — hold onto kids and bags getting in and out at stops.
- Magens Bay’s water is calm and family-friendly, but reef-safe sunscreen and shade breaks still matter — the bay gets hot with little natural shade on the sand.
- As a U.S. territory, cards work widely; still keep some cash for taxis and beach vendors.

If you only do one thing, most families pick Magens Bay over more shopping. The duty-free stores will be there on a future trip; a calm-water swim day with the kids usually isn’t what you regret skipping.
The one thing repeats push
Get to Magens Bay, even for a couple of hours. It’s consistently ranked among the world’s best beaches, and the protected, gently sloping water makes it genuinely easy for young kids. Charlotte Amalie’s shopping is worth a stop, but it’s the side quest here, not the main event.
